In 2002 I was taken ill and became disabled. Being told that I would never work again was a blow, however after watching a programme on the television about lighting some homes in the Himalayas I decided to see if I could design some kind of lighting system that could be used by our friends in Kenya. I spent a lot of time on the internet finding components and approaching suppliers to see if I could negotiate a reasonable price for the parts that I needed. When we next went to Mombassa we travelled with three complete lighting systems to fit into 'our' families’ homes. They were fitted into three different types of house and we went away hoping that they would be successful. The families were thrilled and told us that they ‘even had people around at midnight’ to see their lights.
